The 3 to 2 Nap Transition

Updated

Quick answer: Most babies move from 3 naps to 2 between 6 and 8 months. Signs include refusing the third nap, shorter naps, and bedtime getting pushed past 8 pm. On 2 naps, wake windows are usually about 2½–3½ hours, with an earlier bedtime while your baby adjusts.

How to make the switch

  1. Push the first nap 15 minutes later every few days until it starts about 2½–2¾ hours after waking.
  2. Move the second nap later so it starts in the early afternoon.
  3. Drop the third nap and bring bedtime earlier — as early as 6–6:30 pm at first.
  4. Over 1–3 weeks, bedtime can drift back to its usual time.
